"Some family patterns run so deep that we mistake them for who we are."

Threads That Connect Us is a memoir that weaves vivid childhood memory with the perspective of a seasoned family therapist, examining the enduring search for meaning, resilience, and healing within the systems that shape us. Written by retired clinician Lynn Hoover, the book reflects on growing up in families marked by silence, volatility, or emotional neglect—and on the slow work of reclaiming clarity and grace.

Drawing from both lived experience and decades of therapeutic practice, Hoover explores narcissism, addiction, grief, emotional control, and resilience through the lens of family systems. She considers the experience of the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) in environments that lack nuance, and she examines how inherited patterns quietly influence identity across generations.

Rather than offering prescriptions, the memoir invites sustained reflection. It asks what it means to grieve what never was, to recognize enduring strengths, and to carry forward a reshaped inheritace. At its core, Threads That Connect Us is about understanding the past with compassion while choosing, deliberately and thoughtfully, how to live beyond it.

 Lynn's Story

Lynn Hoover, MSW, LCSW (Ret.), is a retired family therapist and former Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). After decades of helping individuals and families untangle complex emotional patterns, she turned to writing about the lifelong process of healing, differentiation, and connection.

In Threads That Connect Us: A Family Therapist’s Memoir of Resilience, Healing, and Generational Grace, she weaves memory, psychological insight, and lived experience to examine how family systems, personality, and sensitivity shape identity across generations. Her work reflects a commitment to clarity, compassion, and the steady work of reshaping inherited narratives.

Surrounded by her husband and family, she finds daily renewal in nature, creativity, and meaningful connection.
